syllables

Syllables for K Prep

The next area we’ll focus on is syllable awareness. A simple way to think about or explain syllables is that they are parts of a word. One of the best and most developmentally appropriate ways to start playing with syllables is to use the names of people in your family. As you say the name, ask your child, “How many parts do you hear in this name?” For example, Anna (An-na) has two syllables, and Andrea (An-dre-a) has three syllables.  Sometimes the trickiest of all is those words with just one syllable, like mom (mom). From our experience, we find that children have the hardest time with one syllable words because they want to clap out each sound, not each syllable, so please make sure to include plenty of these in your syllable play. alphabet and sound

Alphabet & Sounds for K Prep

Having a good understanding of alphabet and sound knowledge is the beginning step in developing reading skills. It is crucial that children can identify the letters of the alphabet out of order and identify the sound each letter makes. This applies to both capital and lowercase letters and should be automatic. They must have this understanding before reading can take place. Here we have some basics for you on kindergarten prep for alphabet and sound knowledge. First, instead of teaching the name of the letter in isolation, you may also teach it with the sound the letter makes. We know that some letters in the English language can make multiple sounds. Just knowing the letter name does not transfer to reading; they have to know the letter sounds in order to sound out the word.  Aim to work on 3 letters and their sounds at a time. Once the 3 letters and sounds are mastered, you can add in a new one. Keep in mind that repetition is key when teaching alphabet and sounds. One fun activity that supports this skill is using bathtub letters. Here is a link to one of Andrea’s favorite options that she used with her daughter. We have an entire video demonstrating exactly how to use the bathtub letters, specifically what to say during bath time, and how to teach sounds correctly. Countdown 2 Kindergarten Fundamentals

Countdown 2 Kindergarten Fundamentals

You want your child to be as prepared as they can be to start Kindergarten but so many parents don’t know exactly how to do this. This is your chance to take action! Have you ever wondered, “What does my child need to know when they start Kindergarten? Have I prepared my child enough for this major milestone of moving up from preschool to Kindergarten?”  Our Backgrounds We met in 2014 when Meghan was teaching Kindergarten and Andrea was teaching first grade. Both of our grade levels worked closely together and there was an immediate connection because of their shared vision for our students. We both understood the importance of developing a strong foundation in the early childhood years because they are extremely crucial. One night we had dinner to celebrate the end of a school year, and we discussed how we could make a positive impact on even more children outside of our classrooms. That is when we decided to turn our dream into a reality by developing videos to educate and empower parents with the knowledge needed to understand the current kindergarten expectations of today’s classroom. So why is kindergarten readiness important? The most crucial time for the development of a child’s foundation is the first five years. This shapes their future growth, happiness, learning, …
